Do You Have to Pay Tax Immediately After Getting a TIN Number in Sri Lanka?

Many people in Sri Lanka ask the same question after obtaining a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN):

"Do I have to pay tax every month now?"

The simple answer is No.

Having a TIN number does not automatically mean that you must pay income tax. Whether you need to pay tax depends on your taxable income and the tax regulations set by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) of Sri Lanka.

Current Tax-Free Income Limits in Sri Lanka

Under the current income tax rules:

Monthly tax-free income: LKR 150,000
Annual tax-free income: LKR 1,800,000

If your income is below these limits, you may not be required to pay income tax.

When Do You Need to Pay Income Tax?

You will only need to pay tax if your income exceeds the tax-free threshold.

For example:

If your monthly income is LKR 120,000, no income tax is generally payable.
If your monthly income is LKR 150,000, no income tax is generally payable.
If your monthly income is above LKR 150,000, tax may apply only to the amount exceeding the tax-free limit, according to the applicable tax rates.
Is Filing a Tax Return Still Important?

Yes.

Even if you do not have any tax payable, filing a tax return or a zero tax return can be beneficial in certain situations. It helps maintain proper tax records and ensures compliance with IRD requirements.

Common Misunderstandings About TIN Numbers

Many people believe:

Having a TIN means tax must be paid immediately.
Every TIN holder has to file and pay monthly taxes.
A business registration automatically creates a tax liability.

These assumptions are not always correct. Tax obligations depend on your income level, business activities, and applicable tax laws.
